Villa Solmar seen from above, with Lachania beach and the Mediterranean beyond

Lachania · Rhodes · Dodecanese

wake tothe sea

A private beachfront villa on the quiet south coast of Rhodes. Eighty metres of olive grove between the door and the water.

the south coast keeps its own time

Most of Rhodes is somewhere else. The cruise ships dock in the old town, the resorts crowd the north, and the coaches run the same road every morning. Down here, an hour south, the island returns to what it was: olive groves, a pebble shore, and a handful of tavernas that close when the last table leaves.

Villa Solmar sits at the end of that road. Two bedrooms, room for five, and a terrace facing east across open water — which means the sun comes up over the sea and lands, most mornings, directly on your bed.

The villa

Built for long, slow days

Bright, uncluttered rooms that open onto shaded outdoor space. Everything you need is already here, so the holiday can start the moment you put the bags down.

The open living and dining room

An open living room that faces the water

The dining table, the sitting area and the fireplace share one bright, high-ceilinged room. Large windows carry the sea straight through the house. In spring and autumn the fireplace earns its keep; in August the doors stay open and the breeze does the work.

The kitchen, fully equipped

A kitchen you will genuinely cook in

Full-size oven, hob, dishwasher, freezer and espresso machine, with pots, knives, wine glasses and the oil and salt already in the cupboard. The village bakery and the fish counter are ten minutes away, which is usually enough to change the dinner plan.

The master bedroom, facing the sea

Two bedrooms, four beds, one very good view

The master takes the sea-facing corner with a king bed and room-darkening shades — though most guests end up leaving them open for the sunrise. The second bedroom sleeps three, with a double and a single, and a sofa bed in the living room takes the fifth guest.

The workspace, with an iMac and a sea view

A desk with a view, if you need one

A dedicated workspace with a glass desk, an Apple iMac and fast wired internet, set beside a window that looks out to sea. Long stays of a month or more are welcome, and several guests have simply worked from here for a few weeks.

The shaded pergola, set for eight

Outside is where the day happens

A shaded pergola with a long table for eight, a hanging chair under the bougainvillea, sun loungers, and a charcoal and gas barbecue. Beach towels, chairs and a parasol live by the door — the private path to the water is a two-minute walk.

Location

Lachania, and what surrounds it

Far enough south that the coast road empties out, close enough that everything you want to see is a morning's drive.

Lachania is a working village of whitewashed lanes, a shaded square and two or three tavernas where the menu depends on the day. The villa sits below it on the shore, on a stretch of pebble beach that stays quiet even in August.

You will want a car. The airport is a little over an hour north, and everything worth the detour — Prasonisi, Lindos, the wineries inland — is an easy drive on empty roads.

Worth leaving the terrace for

A short list of what guests actually go and do, rather than everything the island has to offer.

  • 25 minutes south

    Prasonisi

The island's southern tip, where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean across a sandbar you can stand on. Flat, warm water on one side; wind and surf on the other. Among the best kitesurfing spots in Europe, and worth the drive even if you never leave the sand.

  • 5 minutes up the hill

    Lachania village

Whitewashed lanes, a square built around two plane trees and a spring, and tavernas serving whatever came in that morning. Go in the evening, order what the owner suggests, and stay for the walk back.

  • 300 metres along the sand

    Mojito beach bar

Close enough to walk to barefoot. Cocktails at sunset, grill nights, and live music on Thursdays through the season.

  • 40 minutes north

    Lindos

The acropolis on its rock above a white village and a horseshoe bay. Go at eight in the morning or after five in the afternoon — in between, it belongs to the coaches.

  • 20 minutes north

    Plakia beach

Soft sand rather than pebbles, shallow and calm, with a taverna at one end. The obvious choice for a day with small children.

  • An afternoon

The Seven Springs and the inland roads

Plane trees, cold water and shade an hour inland, reached on mountain roads through pine forest and past village wineries. A good antidote to a week of salt and sun.

  • The location is amazing. We were able to watch the sunrise from our bed. Many areas in Rhodes are crowded with tourists — this home is peaceful and secluded, and very close to restaurants. Michalis communicated very quickly whenever I had a question. I would definitely stay here again.

  • Picture this: you wake up, open your eyes and see the sunrise right from your bed. The villa is perfectly located in a quiet neighbourhood, 300 metres from the sea — clear water, peaceful beach. Michalis was more than helpful, with suggestions on where to eat and what to visit.

  • An excellent host, quick to communicate and absolutely oriented to his guests' needs. We were allowed to check in earlier and check out later, and there were small welcome gifts. The house is superbly equipped with everything you need, including loungers and a parasol for the beach 80 m away, with private access.

  • The villa was gorgeous and so close to the beach, and only a 20-minute drive to a beautiful sandy beach at Plakia. Also 20 minutes to genuinely one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places I have ever been: Prasonisi, where the Aegean and the Mediterranean meet. An outstanding stay in a great location.

  • A very attentive host. He left a bottle of wine as a welcome. When we were missing a pair of scissors he bought them and brought them to us personally. He responded to all our questions within a very short time.
    Evelin · Germany · September 2025
  • Matches the photos. Fully equipped. We felt very comfortable, and the host was immediately available for any questions. We spent wonderful days there.

I am Greek, but I was born in Switzerland — which gave me an early appreciation for what happens when two ways of doing things meet. The villa reflects that: Greek in its light and its setting, Swiss in the fact that everything works.

I answer messages quickly, usually within the hour, and I would rather you asked. Where to eat on a Tuesday, which beach when the wind turns, whether the road to Prasonisi is worth it in April — that is the part of hosting I enjoy.

Good to know

Before you book

How do I check in?

Self check-in with a smart lock, any time after 16:00 — no waiting for a key handover. Check-out is by 11:00. If your flight lands awkwardly, ask: I can almost always shift either end.

Do I need a car?

Yes, realistically. The south coast is quiet, which is the point, but it also means no bus you would want to rely on. The airport is 70 minutes away and every rental company has a desk there.

How close is the beach, really?

Eighty metres, by a private path from the garden. Pebble rather than sand, with clear water and a gentle slope. Beach towels, chairs and a parasol are already at the villa. For sand, Plakia is 20 minutes north.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. There is a cot, children's books and toys, fireplace guards and a washing machine, and the beach shelves gently. Note there is no dryer, and the villa is on two floors with a staircase.

Can I work from the villa?

Comfortably. There is fast Wi-Fi, a wired ethernet connection and a dedicated desk with an Apple iMac facing the sea. Stays of a month or more are welcome and priced accordingly — just ask.

What does booking direct change?

No platform commission, so the nightly rate is lower than on Airbnb or Booking.com. You deal with me rather than a support queue, and I can be flexible about arrival times, longer stays and small requests.

How do I pay, and when?

A deposit confirms the dates and the balance is due on arrival. I will send payment details with your confirmation — nothing is taken through this website.

Are pets allowed?

Please ask before booking and I will let you know honestly whether it will work for your dates.
